Advertising is just a component of marketing. Advertising is the component that is responsible for raising awareness about our business, product, or service. Marketing is extremely broad and involves many different practices on wide spectrum. Some other components of marketing include market research, public relations, customer support, and sales strategy. In order to be able to advertise, other marketing functions must first be completed, as in order to advertise to consumers you must first know what they react positively to, and know how to develop the type of product they want in the first place. You must also anticipate how this product will compete with similar products from other firms, and how you can advertise and showcase what makes your product better than the average. These are all functions marketers are responsible for. Marketing isn’t advertising, it’s also the before, the after, and the in-between.
